Leon Haytayan makes our list of the 1,000 Most Influential People in the Jewelry Industry. Known as one of the Armenian Founding Fathers of the Downtown Los Angeles Jewelry District, Leon began his career in the industry in 1978, when he opened a tiny booth in the jewelry mart at 6th and Hill Street.
Leon worked hard and hustled his way into the market by using his keen sense of business, providing his customers with the best quality pieces he could find or make, then wrap them with his unique charm and grace, giving 5 star customer service and a fair price, with a smile and an espresso! Who could resist.
Leon moved up in the ranks from retailer to supplier to manufacturer and designer, ultimately finding the best factories worldwide to produce his jewelry. Castings from LA, Gold from Italy, Diamonds from India and Israel, Jewelry from Bangkok and Hong Kong. His work ethic stayed strong as his company, Haytayan Jewelers, became anchors at the major jewelry supplier shows in Las Vegas, New York and Miami.
Business boomed as the collection grew, from gold and nugget jewelry in the late 70’s, to follow the waves of demand for baguette diamond jewelry, invisibly set princess cut and pave jewelry in the 1980s and 90s. At that time, Haytayan was growing his following, ultimately supplying thousands of independent retail stores, dealers and chains.
Throughout his successful journey, Leon remained very grounded and always treated his customers, suppliers and employees with old world respect and consideration, which is rarely seen today. He has always been a staunch supporter of the Armenian Community, with honors and accolades to mention.
In 2000, Leon achieved a personal dream of opening a jewelry boutique on North Beverly Drive in world famous Beverly Hills, California. He had personally curated and acquired a most incredible collection of fine jewelry that he showcased in a prestigious jewel box he proudly named, “Leon’s”. Its where celebs, visitors and local residents could buy something special, from a trusted professional jeweler and more importantly, a friend.
His legacy continues today in Beverly Hills on swanky Brighton Way, close to all of the finest shopping and dining in Beverly Hills. He still greets everyone with a warm smile and the best service you can get.
